Additive Manufacturing / 3D Printing and Indoor Air Quality

Overview

Additive Manufacturing and 3D PrintingAdditive manufacturing is the process in which computers design and fabricate a 3 dimensional part by adding materials one layer at a time. Also called 3D printing, this form of production is the opposite of a subtractive manufacturing process like milling which cuts into larger blocks of material to create smaller objects. As a result, less metal, polymer or ceramic is wasted with 3D printing construction. Many industries require 3D printing equipment for use in rapid prototyping or for the fabrication of complex construction parts.

Commonly used in the dental, medical, jewelry and construction industries, the main types of additive manufacturing processes include:

Health Risks of 3D Printing

While 3D printing allows for the fast design and production of complex parts, the process poses some risks to workers. Additive manufacturing releases fumes and dust that are dangerous if inhaled. Containing both ultrafine particles (UFP) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), exposure to 3D printer fumes can cause a number of adverse health issues.

A 3D fume extraction and filtration system protects workers by removing and containing hazardous particulate, gas and odors generated from additive manufacturing processes.
